French Man Dies After Attack By Serbian Hooligans

A French soccer fan died from injuries suffered in a Belgrade bar ahead of a Europa League match between Partizan Belgrade and Toulouse on September 17. Brice Taton received numerous head and chest injuries administered from a 30-strong group armed with iron bars and baseball bats, Reuters reported.

The death comes amid a surge of extremist violence in Serbia that has "cast a shadow on Serbia's image in the world," according to Jean Francois Terral, France's ambassador in Belgrade. "I am shocked at a certain [complacency] towards this phenomenon, especially the statements that deny the need to dissemble these groups, which in the end leads to them being able to act freely," Terral told the Serb daily newspaper Blic.
