[UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE]
Fiorentina and Lyon came out firing and were rewarded with big wins on Day 2 of the group stage of the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League.
Inter Milan's tentative form continued, however, and it almost paid dearly in Russia. Here are three things we learned on Tuesday ... Stevan Jovetic is
going to make a ton of money for Fiorentina and himself.
The shaggy-haired Montenegrin Stevan Jovetic
, only 19, scored twice in a span of
nine minutes in the first half to give Fiorentina a 2-0 win over Liverpool in Group E. He signed with Fiorentina a year ago in an $11 million deal from Serbian club Partizan, where he made his
league debut at the age of 16. Fiorentina should be able to get a lot more money for Jovetic, who goes by the nickname "Jo Jo." Manchester United and Bayern Munich are among the clubs said to be
pursuing him. Jose Mourinho has lost his touch in the Champions League.
Inter Milan's 1-1 tie at Russian club Rubin Kazan extended
the Italian champion's winless streak in the Champions League to seven games, dating back almost a year. Inter was lucky to escape from Russia with a point after Mario Balotelli
was sent off in the second half. Inter is third in its group, behind Barcelona and Dynamo Kiev, but should reach the knockout phase. Its chances of going any farther
appear to be slim, though. You can throw away Lyon's "boring" tag?
Lyon's 4-0 win at Debrecen gives it 26 goals in its first 11 La
Ligue and Champions League matches of the season. Several of the goals against Debrecen were beauties. Bosnian teenager Miralem Pjanic
scored another superb
free kick and set up two other goals. Frenchman Bafetimbi Gomis
completed the scoring with a deft lob. During its seven-year reign as French champion, you'd
never have seen the words "Lyon" and "beau" together. Boring was more like it. But Lyon's fall from grace has brought a change in approach. With the sale of Karim
to Real Madrid, Lyon went out and bought Argentine Lisandro Lopez
, Brazilian Michel Bastos
and Gomis, and
they've teamed with Pjanic to form one of most exciting front fours in Europe.
