Poland Game Do-or-Die for Slovakia

Slovakia blew a chance to qualify for the World Cup on Saturday, coming up short in a 2-0 loss to Slovenia. The loss sets up a crucial mid-week clash against Poland that Slovakia goalkeeper Jan Mucha called "a game of life and death.'' "We have no choice," he said. "We have to win and delight all Slovakian fans.''

Slovakia captain Robert Vittek promises his team will rebound to seal first place in the group and its first ever place in the tournament. ''This side has huge team spirit," Vittek said. "We will perk up and win in Poland. Qualification will be ours. We have never been so close to qualifying. Maybe this was the problem (on Saturday). We allowed emotions to bring down our performance.''

If Slovakia loses more points, a Slovenia win against minnows San Marino would allow Slovenia to vault into first place in the group.
