Charlie Davies making progress

Charlie Davies, who seriously injured in a one-car accident a week ago, was moved out of the ICU on Saturday and has been able to speak and receive visitors at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

On the eve of the USA-Costa Rica World Cup qualifier, the U.S. national team star was involved in a fatal one-car accident on the George Washington Parkway which claimed the life of a 22-year-old woman.

He will undergo surgery early next week to repair a broken left elbow and may require operations to repair facial fractures. He also suffered a lacerated bladder and fractures to the tibia and femur bones in his right leg.

The Davies family has released a statement in appreciation for the support of Charlie and has set up an e-mail account CharlieDavies9@yahoo.com at where fans can send their own messages to the player as he continues his recovery.

Davies' recovery could take as long as 12 months, effectively ruling him out of the 2010 World Cup.
