Santana Steps Down as South Africa Coach

Joel Santana quit as South Africa coach on Monday. The South African Football Association said its management committee and Santana had "unanimously agreed" that the Brazilian would leave the job "with immediate effect." An executive meeting on Friday aims to indicate some of Santana's possible replacements. Fans and commentators criticized the 60-year-old Santana after South Africa lost to Iceland last week, marking the team's eighth loss in nine matches since June.
 
Santana was appointed in April last year to replace fellow Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira, who resigned for personal issues. Critics of Santana have harped on the coach's lack of international experience as well as his lack of fluent English.
