Following a dismal start to the season and a 4-0 drubbing by Chelsea, Atletico Madrid fired head coach Abel Resino on Friday. The club, which has won only one of its last 10 games, lies 15th in the Spanish league and last in its Champions League group. "I gave it everything I have, but soccer is capricious and we are not getting the results we want," said Resino, who was appointed in February to replace Javier Aguirre. "However, I am leaving with a clear conscience because I tried."

Assistant coach Santi Denia will take charge of the team in Saturday's league game against Mallorca. Spanish media reports have named possible replacements for Resino, including Luis Aragones, who led Spain to the 2008 European Championship title, former Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores, ex-Real Madrid boss Bernd Schuster and former Turkey coach Fatih Terim.
