Real Salt Lake douses Fire

Real Salt Lake, the lowest seed in the MLS playoffs, advanced to MLS Cup '09 against the Los Angeles Galaxy with a 5-4 shootout win after its game at Chicago before another sellout crowd ended in a 0-0 tie.

Goalie Nick Rimando was the hero, stopping three Fire penalty kicks after RSL went behind in the second round of the shootout after Javier Morales missed. Fellow Argentine Fabian Espindola also missed over the top with a chance to win the game for RSL in the sixth round.

Ned Grabavoy, a 119th-minute substitute and Chicago product, won the shootout in the seventh round.

RSL, which won at defending champion Columbus last week, again played some very entertaining soccer, but the Fire had the best chance when Brian McBride hit the crossbar.
