COLLEGE: Barto out as UNLV coach

Barry Barto is out as UNLV menÆs coach.

ôThis decision was based on performance, and in the best interest of the menÆs soccer program that we make this change,ö said UNLV Athletic Director Mike Hamrick. ôWe would like to see the program go in a new direction, as we aspire for all of our sports to challenge for conference championships and go to the NCAA Tournament. We would like to thank Barry for his contributions to UNLV athletics.ö

This past year the Rebels finished with a 2-16-1 mark and were 0-9-1 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action. In 24 years at UNLV, Barto had a 221-200-38 record. He also guided the program to five NCAA Tournament appearances, including two trips to the NCAA Second Round (1983, 1985). But the Rebels have had only two winning seasons since 1992 and were 14-40-1 the last three years.

Barto came to UNLV in 1982 after six years at his alma mater, Philadelphia Textile. After succeeding Walter Chyzowych, he led Textile to final four appearances in 1978 and 1981 and compiled a 85-15-6 record. He was one of the first Americans to start in the NASL in the early 1970s and earned 16 caps for the USA.

BartoÆs contract, which runs through 2009, will be honored through the end of its term. He will be reassigned within the UNLV athletic department. Assistant coach Frank DÆAmelioÆs contract was not renewed.
