The controversy over the handball that sent France through to the World Cup finals at Ireland's expense reached the highest diplomatc levels Thursday when French president Nicolas Sarkozy
apologized to Ireland. Sarkozy talked with Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen
at an EU summit in Brussels. "I told Brian Cowen
how sorry I was for them," he said. "But don't ask me to substitute myself for the referee, or the French football authorities, or the European football authorities: leave me right where I am."
