Why Seattle embraces soccer

Andrew Guest explains in detail why the stunning success of MLS in Seattle was thanks to factors far beyond a solid Sounders business plan. Guest, who grew up in Seattle in the 1970s and 1980s, details the "landmarks" -- stadiums, indoor facilities, soccer pubs, adult leagues, college teams, soccer stores -- that created a soccer culture in the Emerald City. "So while the 2009 MLS Cup was a nice tribute to the success of MLS in Seattle, much of that success may actually derive from an eclectic American geography that created the landmarks to make it all possible. And may yet make it possible elsewhere."
