Threat of Chile's World Cup ban lifted

Chilean fans could breathe easier Thursday after First Division club Rangers withdrew its lawsuit that threatened to cost Chile its berth in next year's World Cup finals. FIFA, which does not approve of courts intervening in soccer matters, had given the Chilean soccer federation (ANFP) 72 hours to get Rangers to call off its legal action or else risk suspension from FIFA and its competitions, including the World Cup, which Chile qualified for for the first time since 1998. Rangers had gone to court when it was handed a three-point penalty for fielding six players in the second half of its game against Cobreloa, violating Chilean league rules that limit five foreigners. The three points resulted in it being relegated.
