Nogueira puts on clinic against Wake

[NORTH CAROLINA-WAKE FOREST] Casey Nogueira, the 2008 Women's Player of the Year, put on a clinic, scoring three goals to lead North Carolina to a 5-2 win over ACC rival Wake Forest. The Tar Heels return to the semifinals of the NCAA Women's Tournament for the 25th time in 28 years.

Nogueira put Carolina ahead with a header in the fourth minute and then put the game away in the second half, beating two defenders and chipping Wake keeper Amanda Barasha from 25 yards for her second goal and dribbling the ball up field and beating two defenders again before completing her hat trick with a shot from just outside the 18-yard line in the 61st minute.

Reaction ...

"I thought our kids fought hard," Wake coach Tony da Luz said. "We gave up an early goal and I thought playing against the wind, that if we could get to the half down 1-0, then we would have a good chance in the second half to do some thing. We gave up two more goals and that pretty much sealed our fate. I thought we did what we could in the second half. We pressed as much as we could to try to get some goals and got that one to make it 3-1 and then we gave up another one. I thought our kids fought to the end and never gave up. I'm really proud of our group. It's a tremendous senior class that has done great things for our program and gotten us to a place where we've never been before."
