Fort Lewis and Grand Valley State take titles

[NCAA DIVISION II] Fort Lewis (men) and Grand Valley State (women) won titles Saturday at the NCAA Division II national finals in Tampa.

Fort Lewis beat Lees-McRae, 1-0, on David Barden's late goal.

With the title Oige Kennedy is the first coach to win the D2 national championship in his first season.

Grand Valley State defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills by the same score on freshman Ashley Botts' goal for its first women's title.

GVSU (22-0-4) was well represented on the all-tournament team . Junior defender Jenna Wenglinski was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Defensive Player, as junior midfielder Kristen Eible was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player. Joining them was senior forward Irie Dennis and Botts.

"This win is for our program, our current team, alum and everyone that has been apart of this team in the past," GVSU coach Dave DiIanni said. "I am so proud of this team and of our seniors. We have great senior leadership and we are losing a very special class, but are bringing back girls who will use this experience."
