[GERMANY] Has Jens Lehmann played his last game for VfB Stuttgart? It's hard to believe Stuttgart management would want
anything to do with the former German national team keeper after he completely lost it on Sunday. The 40-year-old Lehmann cost his team a win against Mainz when he responded to taunts from Burkina
Faso striker Aristide Bance by shouldering him and standing on his left foot. He was sent off for the gesture, which came with three minutes remaining in the
game and resulted in a penalty kick that Eugen Polanski converted to give Mainz a 1-1 tie and extend Stuttgart's winless streak in the Bundesliga to nine
Lehmann's red card:
After the game, Lehmann was involved in a minor altercation
with a Stuttgart fan, knocking off his glasses off before returning them to the fan.
Earlier in the week, he had been fined $60,000 for comments critical of Stuttgart management for
firing Coach Markus Babbel and of Stuttgart fans.
Lehmann has a history of trouble on and off the field.
He's the only goalie in
the history of the UEFA Champions League to be sent off in a final when he was red-carded in the 16th minute of Arsenal's 2-1 loss to AC Milan in the 2006 final. He once threw an opponent's shoe
behind his goal and pulled a teammate's headband off his head.
Earlier this season, Babbel suspended Lehmann after he paid an unauthorized visit to the Oktoberfest just hours after
giving up a bad goal in Stuttgart's 2-0 loss to Cologne.
Christian Gross, Babbel's replacement, was stunned by Lehmann's latest outburst that
led to the fifth red card of his career.
"The scene with Jens was unnecessary," Gross said. "I know the player Lehmann very well but know little about the person Lehmann. I will
intensively analyze the situation with him. The success of the team is above everything."
Stuttgart sports director Horst Heldt said Lehmann's career with Stuttgart
"I have to speak to him," he said, "but I don't think it will be his last match with Stuttgart. He's going to be suspended but his contract runs until June 30, 2010.
He had a super match until then. He's very angry with himself above all."
