River Plate forward
Diego Buonanotte, a member of Argentina's 2008 Olympic gold-medal team, has been transferred to a hospital in Buenos Aires after being
involved in a car accident in Santa Fe province that killed three friends. He was returning to his family home in the village of Teodelina at 6:45 a.m. when he lost control of his Peugeot in heavy
rain and it hit a tree.
Buonanotte, who was conscious when rescuers arrived, suffered a broken humerus and collar bone, a pulmonary contusion as well other injuries. He and his friends
were returning from a night at a nearby disco when the accident took place.
River Plate president
Daniel Passarella, who arranged for Buonanotte to
be transported to Buenos Aires, visited the player, whose condition remained serious because of the pulmonary contusion. According to the head of River Plate's medical division, Buonanotte still
didn't know his friends died in the accident.
