Despite calls for the Africa Cup of Nations to be canceled following the ambush on the team bus carrying the Togo national team to Angola, the African soccer confederation (CAF) said the tournament, scheduled to start Sunday, would be played. It also called for an investigation into why only Togo among the 16 teams decided to enter Angola by bus instead of airplane.

A bus driver was killed and nine passengers, including two players, were wounded Friday when gunmen, believed to be rebels, fired machine guns at the team bus entering Angola from neighboring Congo and traveling to oil-rich Cabinda, where the Sparrow Hawks are due to play their first game on Monday.

The injured players were goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale of French amateur team GSI Pontivy and defender Serge Akakpo of Romanian team Vaslui. English Premier League star Emmanuel Adebayor was not hurt.

The Front for the Liberation of Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC), which has waged a three-decade separatist fight in the region, claimed responsibility for the attack.
