Ayew lifts Ghana into quarterfinals

A lone goal by midfielder Andre Ayew, the French-born son of the great Abedi Pele, was enough to give Ghana a 1-0 win over 10-man Burkina Faso that moved it into the quarterfinals against host Angola. The Black Stars were without injured star Michael Essien, who has been ruled out of the tournament

The inexperienced Black Stars were already without Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari and John Paintsil.

Ayew's header was the only goal in the must-win game for the Black Stars.

Ivory Coast and Ghana advanced to the quarterfinals in a group reduced to three teams following the withdrawal of Togo.

Burkina Faso's defender Mamadou Tall was sent off in the 66th minute.
