Most spacious Texas facility opens

[STAR SOCCER COMPLEX] The $10 million South Texas Area and Regional Soccer Complex, the most spacious soccer complex in Texas, welcomed approximately 1,500 young from across Texas to its inaugural tournament Feb. 20-21.

The facility -- 40-acre site includes 14 lighted soccer fields and support facilities -- is carved out of the abandoned Longhorn Quarry in Northeast San Antonio.

“Our goal is to provide a truly memorable experience for both soccer players and spectators of all ages in a first-class, safe, professionally managed facility,” STAR director Ed Sakiewicz said.  “STAR participants may not realize it, but while they’re having fun and getting some great exercise, they’re contributing to a wonderful cause."

Proceeds from STAR will support the operation and maintenance of Morgan’s Wonderland, the world’s first family fun park designed especially for special-needs children and adults.

STAR special programs director Dub Farris, formerly North Side Independent School District athletics director, is developing programs for special-education students as well as kids from all socio-economic backgrounds.
