If India national team striker Sunil Chhetri signs for the Kansas City Wizards as is being reported in the Indian press, he would become only the nation's third player to ply his trade in a professional league abroad. Mohamed Salim played for Scottland's Celtic in pre-independence days of India while current national captain Bhaichung Bhutia was with English second division Bury FC.
The 25-year-old shot into prominence with his his hat trick in the AFC Challenge Cup finals against Tajikistan in 2008 that ensured India a berth in the 2011 Asian Cup. Chhetri had an unsuccessful trial with English second division Coventry City last year. He was about to sign for second division Queens Park Rangers last year but could not secure a UK work permit.
