Goals are scarce for openers

[WPS] Goals were scarce on the opening weekend of Women's Professional Soccer as the four games produced only six goals for an average of 1.5 goals a game. Expansion Philadelphia drew more than 6,000 fans for its game against Atlanta, but crowds were down 27 percent for the three returning teams over their opening crowds in 2009.

The Washington Freedom gave up two early goals and fell to the visiting Boston Breakers, 2-1, in Saturday's WPS opener before 3,899 fans, the second smallest crowd in Washington history.

The Breakers got early goals from rookie Lauren Cheney and England international Kelly Smith, both triggered by crosses from 38-year-old Kristine Lilly that the Washington defense failed to clear.

On Sunday, defending champion Sky Blue FC defeated Chicago, 1-0, on Natasha Kai's early goal, while Eniola Aluko hooked up twice with newcomer Shannon Boxx twice for Saint Louis Athletica in its 2-0 win over FC Gold Pride.

First-year teams Philadelphia and Atlanta played to a 0-0 tie at the Independence's John A. Farrell Stadium in West Chester, Pa.
