Thompson leads Rapids past Wizards

[U.S. OPEN CUP] The Colorado Rapids got two goals from Wells Thompson and defeated the Kansas City Wizards, 2-1, in the 2010 U.S. Open Cup's first MLS play-in game, played Tuesday at UMKC.

Kansas City went ahead on a goal by Teal Bunbury in the fourth minute, but Thompson responded, first off a corner kick by Scotsman Jamie Smith in the 24th minute and the second off a pass from Argentine Claudio Lopez, a former Wizard, in the 80th minute.

Sunil Chhetri, the first Indian signed by an MLS team, started for the Wizards.

    Wow. Wells Thompson--he was a disaster in New England, but maybe he just needed a new organization to shine. All the best to him!
