Barcelona shatters La Liga record

[SPAIN] Barcelona retained La Liga title with a record 99 points thanks to its 4-0 win over relegated Valladolid on Sunday. Lionel Messi scored twice to give him 34 league goals, tying the club record set by Brazil's Ronaldo in 1997.

Barca, winner of its 20th league title, finished three points ahead of Real Madrid, which tied Malaga, 1-1.

Starting without playmakers Xavi and Andres Iniesta, Barca took the lead on an own goal by Valladolid defender Prieto in the 27th minute.

Pedro made it 2-0 four minutes later with his 12th goal of the season before Messi finished the game off with two second-half goals.

Barcelona finished with 31 wins, six ties and only one loss (to Atletico Madrid).

Thierry Henry, who lost his starting job to Pedro, probably played his last game for Barcelona, coming on for Bojan Krkic in the 77th minute.

The Frenchman is expected to sign with MLS's New York Red Bulls.
