Gooch gets 'wish' to play for free

[AMERICANS ABROAD] U.S. national team defender  Oguchi Onyewu has signed a one-year contract extension with Italian club AC Milan through the 2012-13 season during which he agreed to play without pay.

Onyewu was sidelined for most of the 2009-10 after injuring himself playing for the USA in its final World Cup qualifying match against Costa Rica in October.

Milan said Onyewu had "become a star today with a significant gesture from a personal and professional standpoint."

It added that Onyewu's "wish" not have been paid "has been appreciated by the club."

Onyewu's only appearance for Milan came in the UEFA Champions League.
