Red Bulls move into third round

[U.S. OPEN CUP] New York may be struggling in league play, but the U.S. Open Cup is a different story.

The Red Bulls reached the third round by beating Colorado, 3-0, Wednesday at Red Bull Arena. John Wolyniec scored the first two goals, and Conor Chinn added a third to reverse a three-game losing streak in league play and land a place in the final 16 against an opponent to be determined.

Wolyniec scored in the 11th and 43rd minutes. He scored the first goal from a low cross served from the right flank by Irving Garcia, and netted again after Tony Tchani burst into the attacking third to supply Wolyniec with a ball he drove into the net.

Chinn scored in the 56th minute on a play triggered by Sinisa Ubiparipovic, who earlier had relayed the ball to Garcia on the first goal. Ubiparipovic played a ball into the penalty area that the Rapids failed to clear and Chinn lifted it over the dive of goalkeeper Ian Joyce.

The Rapids finished the match with 10 men; Danny Earls plowed into Ubiparipovic on a late tackle and was sent off.

In previous preliminary matches against MLS opposition, New York beat Philadelphia, 2-1, and New England, 3-0.

The Red Bulls return to league action Saturday with a road game against the Revs.

The Rapids host Seattle, which beat Boca Juniors, 3-0, in a friendly on Wednesday.
