Mwanga tops Saturday's Three Stars

[MLS] Goals were plentiful in MLS games played on Saturday when the seven games produced 27 scores. Four games yielded five goals apiece, yet there were also shutout victories for Los Angeles, which knocked Columbus from the unbeaten ranks, 2-0, and Colorado. Here are Saturday's Three Stars ...

1. DANNY MWANGA (Philadelphia). The Union rallied from a 2-1 deficit in Houston to win on the road for the first time. After he replaced Fred in the 54th minute, Mwanga played a square ball to Sebastian Le Toux, whose deflected shot eluded Pat Onstad to tie the game with 21 minutes to play. Three minutes into stoppage time, LeToux broke free down the right side and centered a ball that Mwanga directed past Onstad for his second stoppage-time goal in as many games.

2. SHALRIE JOSEPH (New England). In his second game back after a month-long rehabilitation for substance abuse, Joseph played the entire 90 minutes and set up the opening and winning goals in a 3-2 Revs’ triumph over New York. In the eighth minute, his delicate chip over the back line ran for Marko Perovic to post a 1-0 lead. After goals at both ends tied the game, 2-2, New York went down to nine men. With 10 minutes left, Joseph chipped into the goalmouth and rookie Zack Schilawski headed in his fifth goal of the season.

3. FABIAN ESPINDOLA (Real Salt Lake). After 30 scoreless minutes at Rio Tinto Stadium RSL scored twice in three minutes and rolled over Kansas City, 4-1. In the 31st minute, Espindola ran onto a diagonal ball from Andy Williams, took one touch, and drilled a left-footed shot along the ground and off the inside of the far post. With Kansas City still reeling, he broke free on the left side again and curled a chip that keeper Jimmy Nielsen, perhaps blinded by the sun, pushed into the path of Alvaro Saborio, who bundled the ball into the net.

Honorable mention: Stefan Frei (Toronto FC), Brad Davis (Houston), Andy Najar (D.C. United).
