Ivory Coast star striker Didier Drogba broke the inner bone of his right forearm in a friendly against Japan in Switzerland on Friday but had successful surgery and the Elephantshave hope that the African Player of the Year will be able to play in the World Cup.

“His recovery has been extremely encouraging,” said a spokesman of the Ivory Coast federation. “It issuggested that, at this stage, all the signs are good and there is great hope the captain of the Elephants will be in action with his teammates as soon as possible.”

The Elephants openagainst Portugal on Tuesday. FIFA allows teams to wait until 24 hours before their first game to replace an injured player.
