English hammered in the press

England's national team and its coach, Fabio Capello, were hammered in the press after its 4-1 loss to Germany, its worst defeat ever to its archrival, in Sunday's round of 16 at the World Cup. The Sun summed things up with this caption of Capello looking at his watch: "Time's up, Fab. Clear off -- and take these losers with you."

"England coach Fabio Capello and his team of self-regarding flops have presided over a national embarrassment, one of the most comprehensive humiliations in our sporting history," lamented the Daily Mail.  "England played three calamitous matches out of four, failed to score goals and defended like fools -- and that's all [Capello's] responsibility," said the Times.

Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda and his assistant also came in for criticism for not allowing a goal scored by Frank Lampard on a shot that had clearly crossed the line. "The ref and his assistant were the only two people in the ground who didn't think the ball had crossed the line," commented the Daily Mail. But that was no excuse for the loss. "England were robbed of a goal, not the result. They deserved to lose," said the Times.
