Ghana's Black Stars, who fell to Uruguay in dramatic fashion in the World Cup quarterfinals -- losing on penalty kicks after Uruguay preserved a 1-1 tie with Luis Suarez's handball -- returned home to a red-carpet reception, greeted by thousands of fans late on Monday.

Ghana became the third African team to reach the final eight after Cameroon (1990) and Senegal (2002) but came up short of making African history by reaching the semis when Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty after Suarez's handball on the goal line.

“The Stars fought gallantly, not only making Ghana proud, but the entire African continent,” said Felicia Acheampong, a 53-year-old teacher who was among the fans at the airport who created a carnival atmosphere.

Captain Stephen Appiah told the crowd, “We did our best for Ghana and Africa, but luck was not on our side. I am not a prophet, but I want to say that that we will qualify for the next World Cup in 2014. We will be battle-ready as title contenders.”
