Chelsea pursues record transfer for Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres may have been a bust so far at the 2010 World Cup, but Chelsea hasn't lost interest in the Spanish striker.

New Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson wants to keep Torres, but Chelsea is prepared to offer a record British transfer fee for the 25-year-old striker. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is reported to be in South Africa in the hopes of completing a deal, but Torres wants to wait and talk with Hodgson after the World Cup.

"There's time for [Liverpool]," he told El Mundo Deportivo, "but I want to finish the World Cup, go on vacation, as I haven't had a vacation for three years, rest and then there will be time to talk about all of that. The situation isn't going to change whether we talk soon or later. Honestly, teams won't be able to do anything until the World Cup has finished. The players here prefer to wait -- there is time."
