  • BBC, Monday, July 12, 2010 1:45 PM

Spain's World Cup-winning squad landed in Madrid in the early afternoon on Monday amid scenes of joyous celebration in the country's capital. A big crowd chanted and car horns sounded as goalkeeper Iker Casillas, carrying the trophy, led the team down the steps of the plane on which the words "Campeones" (Champions) and "Orgullosos de nuestra seleccion" (Proud of our squad) were emblazoned. After a nap, the players met with Spain's royal family and Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

More than one million fans are expected to line the streets for an open-top bus parade starting Monday evening.  The two-hour parade will end at the esplanade near the Puente del Rey, where the festivities are expected to continue officially until midnight.
