Cruyff 'hurt' by Dutch final performance

Dutch soccer great Johan Cruyff wrote in his column for the Barcelona-based daily El Periodico that the Netherlands deserved to have been left with nine players early in the final against Spain because two tackles were "so ugly and tough they even hurt me."

Cruyff was the star of the Netherlands team that reached the World Cup for the first time, in 1974, and fell, 2-1 to host West Germany. That Dutch team, however, was widely hailed for its exciting "total soccer" and a sympathetic loser. Of the team that lost to Spain, Cruyff wrote, the players “didn’t want the ball. And, lamentably and sadly, they played very dirty."
