From SISL to I-League

[USL] United Soccer Leagues has come full circle with the announcement that it will launch the I-League -- the Indoor Professional Soccer -- in 2011.  The new league’s founding franchise: Rochester Lancers.

USL began as the SISL -- Southwest Indoor Soccer League --  with five teams in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico in 1986 and didn't venture outdoors until 1989.

Announcements regarding additional I-League franchises in Syracuse, N.Y., and Hampton Roads, Va., are expected shortly.

Plans call for the regional divisions in the Northeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, Mid-South and Southeast.

The I-League is scheduled to kick off in November 2011,

When Francisco Marcos launched the SISL, indoor soccer was at its height. The Major Indoor Soccer League later folded, as have several other national indoor leagues (MISL and CISL).

A new Major Indoor Soccer League with six teams will enter its third season this winter.
