Islanders deserved shocking win over Galaxy

The Los Angeles Galaxy suffered one of the worst defeats in its history when it fell to the D-2 Puerto Rico Islanders, 4-1, at the Home Depot Center in what veteran Gregg Berhalter called a "bizarre game." The Islanders had four shots on goal and scored four goals. With Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle in the lineup, Galaxy could only manage a late own goal.

"We'll give a lot of credit to them," said Berhalter, "but we also have to look at ourselves and say it clearly wasn't good enough. It was one of those games where you keep knocking your ahead against the wall and waiting to get a break, and then we give up goals. It was just a nightmare."

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena was not happy with the performance of his players. "Our experienced players did not have a good night for us tonight," he said. "Our finishing was poor and theirs was superb. Their goalkeeping was excellent. Ours was not good enough."

Islanders coach Colin Clarke admitted he was pretty surprised with the outcome. "We knew coming in here was going to be a tough night for us," he said, "but we're delighted. We deserve it. Our boys worked hard."
