Spurned by Ajax to cut a deal with Martin Jol, Fulham has moved quickly to sign ex-Welsh international Mark Hughes tomanage the Europa League.

Formerly the manager of Blackburn and Manchester City, Hughes will take over a team that reached the Europa League final and finished 10th in the Premier Leaguelast season under Roy Hodgson, who took over at Liverpool several weeks ago.

U.S. coach Bob Bradley hadbeen mentioned among candidates for the Fulham job, but Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed brought Hughes’ name forward when discussions with Jol and Ajax brokedown.

Among Hughes’ tasks is to decide what to do with U.S. forward Eddie Johnson, who has failed to impress while with the club, which has senthim out on loan without much success. Johnson scored a goal in a 5-0 preseason win over Brentford last week.
