Concacaf women headed to Cancun and Playa del Carmen

[DATEBOOK] The USA was grouped with Costa Rica, Haiti and Guatemala -- three teams that it has never lost to -- in Concacaf qualifying for the 2011 Women’s World Cup to take place Oct. 28-Nov. 8 in the Mexican resort towns of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Host Mexico, Canada, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana will play at the Estadio Beto Avila, home of the baseball Quintana Roo Tigres, in Cancun, while the USA, Costa Rica, Haiti and Guatemala will face off in Estadio Unidad Deportiva, home of third division Inter Playa del Carmen in Playa del Carmen.

The competition, formerly known as the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup, offers two full berths to the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany for the champion and runner-up while the third-place team will face the fifth-place European finisher for a World Cup spot.

The match dates and times for the qualifying tournament will be announced in the near future.
