John Spencer: 'I hate the word expansion'

Having played and coached in MLS following a stellar career in England and Scotland, John Spencer brings a rare breadth of experience to his new job as head coach of the Portland Timbers. Upon the official announcment of his hiring earlier this week, Spencer outlined his Designated Players:

“They have to be the right age and we’re not looking to bring in older guys, we’re looking to bring in younger guys that have an upside to them as well. ... I know the fans are desperate to get a big-name signing. But I think it’s important that we get everything right, the foundation of the club right first. ... The designated player makes the most money, everybody knows that. So, you better be the hardest working guy in practice. Because if not, you’re not gonna be welcome with this club.”

On taking charge of an expansion team, Spencer said, “I hate the word expansion, because it seems that the word expansion allows the players, coaches, staff and management ... they have a two-year hiatus to say, 'Well, we're only an expansion team. We need to go out and start winning games."
