Toreros set the tempo early

[SAN DIEGO WOMEN] San Diego was the only unranked team to knock off a Top 25 team, beating No. 20 USC, 1-0, Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams at McAllister Field.

Freshman forward Devany Savage's first collegiate goal off a cross from junior striker Stephanie Ochs into the box was the difference.

"This was a good start to the season for us to beat a competitive program like USC," stated head coach Ada Greenwood. "I think we really set the tempo early on and had great chances to score in the first half, then we got a great goal in the second half form Devany."

The Toreros, who moved into the Soccer America Women's Top 25 at No. 25, outshot the Trojans 10-8 and had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

They will return to action this weekend as they host Arizona and Michigan at the USD Tournament at Torero Stadium.
