[AMERICANS ABROAD] There will be no UEFA Champions League for American Sacha Kljestan. In a cruel blow to its ambitions,
Belgian champion Anderlecht was knocked of the competition when it fell to Serbian club Partizan, 3-2, on penalty kicks in Brussels after the clubs played to a 2-2 tie for the second time.
Kljestan had scored on Saturday against Lokeren in domestic action but was not in the squad for Anderlecht, which will move into the less lucrative Europa League.
Partizan led 2-0 on goals by Brazilian striker Cleo, but Anderlecht rallied on goals by teenage star Romelu Lukaku and Guillaume Gillet.
The only Americans whose clubs have qualified for the 2010-11 Champions League are Maurice Edu (Rangers), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan) and Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04).
The other teams to win playoff series on Tuesday were Braga, Werder Bremen, Hapoel Tel Aviv and FC Basel. All but Hapoel won on the road.
