Hawks record historic win at Rutgers

[MONMOUTH WOMEN] Monmouth pulled one of the biggest upsets of the week when it it knocked off Big East power Rutgers, 1-0, on the road for the Hawks' first win ever over a ranked team and their first win over the Scarlet Knights since 1989 when it was the program's first victory.

"It was a terrific result for our program, to beat a ranked team on their field," stated head coach Krissy Turner. "We battled for 90 minutes and on this day that was exactly what we needed."

The Hawks scored the only score of the match in the sixth minute when freshman forward Dana Costello recorded her third goal in two games.

Monmouth, which only registered four shots in the game, then withstood the Rutgers attack, which had 19 shots.

"I am proud of the effort my team exhibited today," said senior goalkeeper Lia Fierro, who made nine saves to record her 31th career shutout. "From the start, we knew what we needed to do and what we wanted to do. We played with confidence and stuck to our game plan. We made the difference in the game."
