Roadrunners show they can play with anyone

[CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD-UC SANTA BARBARA] Wednesday was a day of upsets in men's soccer, and none was bigger than Cal State Bakersfield's 1-0 win over No. 5 UC Santa Barbara in overtime.

Sophomore goalkeeper Eric Shannon kept the Roadrunners in the game with eight saves. UCSB dominated the first half, but Shannon stopped the Gauchos’ Michael Tetteh on a breakaway with a great sliding save.

Bakersfield won the game in the 97th minute when Alberto Navarro found Gyasi Zardes on a free kick, and the freshman buried the ball into the back of the net.

“This was a great way to start the season,” says CSUB coach Simon Tobin. “This is one of the biggest win for the team and for myself in the Division I era. We showed tonight we can play with anyone.”

The win was CSUB’s first over a ranked opponent at the Division I level.
