Cabrera reaches out beyond residency program

[U.S. UNDER-17 BOYS] U.S. under-17 boys national team coach Wilmer Cabrera took 24 players to  Madrid for 12 days of training at the Spanish soccer federation’s famed Ciudad de Futbol. Mobi Fehr, 15, is a defender in the youth program at Japanese club Tokyo Verdy.

Midfielder Matthew Dunn joined FC Cologne's youth program last year from FC Dallas Juniors.

The American-born Danny Zaid was discovered playing at Futeca Camp Elite, a Guatemalan soccer academy.

Five players joined the U-17 program from MLS academy teams, while the team's top-rated forward, Kellen Gulley, is a product of the Mississippi Chicago Fire Juniors.

The U.S. team will play friendlies against youth teams from Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano, as well as two matches against Spain’s U-17s.

The 2011 CONCACAF U-17 championship, which will be held in Jamaica from Feb. 12-28.
