Ferguson: 'I did the right thing'

[UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson says he did the right thing in leaving Wayne Rooney out of Saturday's English Premier League game against Everton, but the United forward will be in the lineup on Tuesday when United opens it UEFA Champions League campaign at home against Rangers.

Ferguson wanted Rooney to avoid "terrible abuse" from the fans of his former club after revelations about his private life were published.

"I did the right thing." Ferguson said. "And I have no concerns about playing him tomorrow at all. I don't know if tomorrow will inspire him. He has a lot of experience behind him. But I do know scoring for England last week will have given him a boost.''

Rooney scored the opening goal in a 3-1 victory at Switzerland that gave England two wins in its first two Euro 2012 qualifiers.

The Rangers game should mark often-injured defender Rio Ferdinand's first game of the season at Old Trafford.
