Barcelona avoids repeat of Saturday's nightmare

[UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] For a few minutes, it looked like it would be Saturday night all over again at the Camp Nou as Barcelona, loser to promoted Hercules at home, fell behind Greek club Panathinaikos in the 20th minute of their UEFA Champions League opener on Tuesday.

After a series of misses, Barca finally broke through on a goal by Lionel Messi and went on to rout Pana, 5-1.

Messi scored two goals, missed a penalty and had a shot hit of both posts before the rebound was put away by Pedro. David Villa scored his first Champions League goal for Barcelona, and Brazilian Dani Alves added a late goal.

"We couldn't win on Saturday and knew we had to win tonight," said Pedro. "This victory gives us a lot of confidence and now we have a difficult match at Atletico Madrid, which is a tough team especially at home."
