Liverpool boss says sorry

Roy Hodgson, who replaced Rafael Benitez at the Liverpool helm in the offseason, has apologized for Liverpool's English League Cup loss to fourth division Northampton, which prevailed on penalty kicks following a 2-2 tie.

"We were playing lower league opponents," Hodgson said. "Whatever happens, if it doesn't result in a win it's very negative," he said. "It's a setback for the club, one of many we are facing at the moment. ...  All I can do is congratulate Northampton and apologize to everyone; the fans came expecting to see us win and I expected us to win but it wasn't to be."

Liverpool, which lost 3-2 to Manchester United last Sunday, has only five points from its first five EPL games.
