It took just one La Liga loss -- in its fifth game of the season -- for Sevilla to fire Coach Antonio Alvarez and replace him with former Real Mallorca coach
Gregorio Manzano.
Sunday's 2-0 loss to promoted Hercules left Sevilla seventh in La Liga with eight points in five games. Alvarez was hired in
March, led Sevilla to the Copa del Rey championship and fourth place in La Liga but paid the price for its failure to reach the group stage of the 2010-11 Champions League. Sevilla lost in a two-game
playoff series to Braga.
Alvarez came in for heavy criticism for not starting forward Luis Fabiano. The Brazil star started just one of five La
Liga games and had no goals after signing a new three-year contract in August.
