According to one of the executives in charge of England's efforts to host either the 2018 or 2022 World Cup, it will target the earlier competition -- and that he thinks the U.S. will soon withdraw
from 2018 consideration.
David Dein said on Tuesday he is following the lead of UEFA President Michel Platini in making the move to secure the 2018
competition. "Michel Platini believes that 2018 should come to Europe and we believe that is our strongest case," said Dein. "We are sure it won't be long before the United States will withdraw from
2018 leaving themselves a run on 2022.
"We are not really interested in 2022, consequently we will almost certainly withdraw from 2022, leaving us with a European battle."
Qatar, South Korea, Japan and Australia would remain as U.S. rivals for the 2022 competition if this scenario plays out.
