Gabarra resigns as Washington head coach

[WPS] Jim Gabarra, the head coach of the Washington Freedom dating back to its three years in the WUSA, has resigned his position with the Freedom following its first-round exit from the WPS playoffs for the second year in a row.

Gabarra began his career as the head coach of Freedom in August 2000 and coached it during the 2001-2003 and 2007-2010 seasons in WUSA, the W-League and WPS. The Freedom won the 2003 WUSA Founders Cup championship, as well as a 2007 W-League North American Championship.

The Freedom struggled during 2010 and Gabarra was rumored to be on his way out during midseason.

Emma Hayes, fired as the Chicago Red Stars head coach, was brought in as a "soccer consultant" to work with the team.

Gabarra is a former U.S. international (14 caps) and married to former U.S. women's star Carin (Jennings) Gabarra, the Navy women's coach.
