Fana leads Islanders past No. 1 seed Rochester

[D-2 PRO LEAGUE] Dominican Republic international Jonathan Fana scored one goal and set up another to lead the Puerto Rico Islanders to a 2-0 win over the top-seed Rochester Rhinos in the first leg of their quarterfinal series in the D-2 Pro League playoffs. In Thursday's other game, the Vancouver Whitecaps got a pair of goals in the first 13 minutes and went on to beat the Portland Timbers, 2-0.

Fana gave the Islanders the lead in the 44th minute and set up Englishman David Foley in the 77th minute for the insurance goal.

The Rhinos finished the game with 10 players after Max Ferdinand was sent off in the 68th minute.

The game was played on artificial turf at Bayamon Soccer Complex after the grass field at Loubriel Stadium was deemed unplayable after six Digicel Caribbean Cup qualifying games were played over the last five days.

Before a crowd of 5,018 fans at Swangard Stadium, the Whitecaps stunned Portland on a goal by 19-year-old Ghanaian Gershon Koffie in the first minute.

Vancouver added a second goal 12 minutes later when Martin Nash converted a penalty kick.
