Nairobi stadium tragedy could have been avoided

For the second time in five years, a stampede at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya, was fatal. Eight fans were killed and scores of other fans injured in a stampede at one of only three gates open for Saturday's derby between Kenya Premier League match between archrivals AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia.

The tragedy could have been avoided, but the stadium had only three gates for the 20,000 fans in attendance, and there were no turnstiles. To make matters worse, there was only one ambulance available for the injured.

According to Peter Ngugi, an Emergency Plus medical technician, the lack of ambulances was but one of the problems. He said bad crowd management triggered the rush of fans, and "mishandling" of the victims further complicated matters. He added that if there been a triage area, more lives could have been saved.
