Bielsa set to bail on Chile

Marcelo Bielsa, who led Chile to impressive performances in 2010 World Cup qualifying and in the finals in South Africa, is expected to leave his post following the election Thursday of Spanish businessman Jorge Segovia as the president of the Chilean soccer association.

Bielsa said before the election that he would resign if Segovia won. Bielsa, an Argentine who was so popular in Chile he was granted honorary citizenship, supported Harold Mayne-Nicholls, the outgoing president and the man who hired him.

“For me it’s a closed case,” Segovia said. “He (Bielsa) has expressed himself clearly that he won’t continue. Therefore, it’s not worthwhile wasting another minute on it.”
